Rebates and funding options
Private clients (no referral needed)
You can book without a referral and pay the full session fee on the day. No Medicare rebate applies.
Medicare
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician, you can claim a rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. You pay the full fee on the day and the rebate is paid into your nominated bank account, usually within a few days.
Private health insurance
Some funds provide rebates for individual psychological therapy, commonly between $40 and $120 per session, depending on your level of cover. Check directly with your fund. You cannot claim Medicare and private health insurance for the same session.
TAC clients
TAC clients are accepted. Sessions must be approved by the TAC before you begin, and your claim number and case manager details are needed. Approved sessions are billed directly to the TAC, so there is usually no out-of-pocket cost to you.
WorkCover clients
WorkCover (WorkSafe) clients are accepted. Sessions must be approved by your WorkCover insurer or agent before you begin, and your claim number and case manager details are needed. Approved sessions are billed directly to the insurer, so there is usually no out-of-pocket cost to you.
TAC and WorkCover: If you have a TAC or WorkCover claim, please include your claim number and case manager details when you request an appointment so approval can be confirmed before your first session.
Concession fees
Concession appointments are available for pension card holders, Disability Support Pension (DSP) recipients, and international students or workers who do not have access to Medicare. Please enquire when submitting an appointment request if you would like to discuss a concession fee.
Sessions are for individual adults aged 18 and over. Payment is made on the day of the appointment.
Young people aged 15–17 are also welcome to enquire; each request is considered individually. If you are aged 15–17, or enquiring on behalf of someone in this age group, please book a free 15-minute phone consultation with Della to discuss whether Luma Psychology is a suitable fit.
Common questions about fees
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No. You can book as a private client without a referral. A referral is only needed if you would like to claim a Medicare rebate.
How do Medicare rebates work?
If your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician provides an eligible referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you can claim a Medicare rebate for each session, for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. You pay the full fee on the day and the rebate is paid back into your nominated bank account, usually within a few days.
Do you accept TAC and WorkCover clients?
Yes. TAC and WorkCover clients are accepted once sessions have been approved by the TAC or your WorkCover insurer. Please provide your claim number and case manager details when you request an appointment. Approved sessions are billed directly to the insurer, so there is usually no out-of-pocket cost to you.
Can I claim private health insurance as well?
Rebates may be available depending on your insurer and level of cover, so it is worth checking directly with your health fund. You cannot claim both Medicare and private health insurance for the same session.
What is the Medicare Safety Net?
Once your out-of-pocket medical costs for the calendar year pass your Medicare Safety Net threshold, Medicare increases your rebate, which reduces the cost of later appointments. Single people are registered automatically; couples and families need to register to share a threshold. You can check your balance in the Medicare app or your Medicare account on myGov.
What is the cancellation policy?
At least 48 hours' notice is required to change or cancel an appointment. Without that notice a cancellation fee applies, as the appointment time has been held for you and cannot usually be offered to someone else.
How long is a session and how do I pay?
Sessions are 50 minutes and are for individual adults aged 18 and over. Young people aged 15–17 are also welcome to enquire; each request is considered individually. If you are aged 15–17, or enquiring on behalf of someone in this age group, please book a free 15-minute phone consultation with Della to discuss whether Luma Psychology is a suitable fit. Extended 75 minute appointments are available when additional time may be helpful. Payment is made on the day of the appointment.
Are Telehealth sessions the same fee?
Yes. Telehealth sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays are the same length and fee as in person appointments, and the same Medicare rules apply. After-hours Telehealth appointments are available on those days.
